Ialysos Freestyle Battle

16.06.2007
No one would have believed this but the forecast was right and the competition started as announced at 12 o’clock.

The first heats had happened with already great conditions and as the wind was going down, the Racedirector relayed on the locals which told him that after one hour the wind will be up again. So the race took a break for one hour and after this the boys were ripping like hell.

To have an idea how high the level is at the moment; check out the moves in one of the first heats. There’ve been: flaka, eslider, switch chachoo, super high flaka, spock, heli tack, forward loop and a one handed spock 540. This in a 5 minute heat in the first round…

And if you think its gets easier in the higher rounds you’re completely wrong.
Again there’ve been some surprises but not a lot. Andy Olandersson (Fanatic/NP) moved thru his heats throwing out Tine Slabe (F2/Naish), Andrea Rosati (RRD/NP) and after loosing against Kevin Mevissen (JP/NP) found himself in the losers Final.

There he met Michael Rossmeier (Exocet/the Loft) who advanced against Stam Promponas (Fanatic/North Sails), his friend Jakub Kosmowski (Tabou/Gaastra) and even the winner of Podersdorf Nikolas Akgaczyan.

In the Final we found a great couple and a legendary and exiting heat. As mentioned Kevin Mevissen was in and he managed to eliminate some big names. Hi opponents were Michi Sumereder, Normen Günzlein (JP/NP) and Andy Olandersson. The second competitor in the final was Andre Paskowski (F2/ North Sails) and for sure he doesn’t have to be introduced. On his way there he send Mattia Pedrani (Mistral/North Sails), Matteo Guazzoni and Mich Rossmeier (Exocet/the Loft) back on the beach.

The actual Final was a super nice show and both showed great moves. Andre pulled 12 moves and returned to the beach with dry hair, where Kevin on the other side crashed more times and although he had super difficult tricks the decision was 4 : 1 for Andre Paskowski. The Overall Impression of his heat satisfied the judges a bit more and so the winner of the single elimination was once again the young German.

Well usually a story ends here but as Rhodes is a legend itself, it was a legendary day!!!

After a short break of 30 min we continued with the double elimination. and there it was where some riders took the chance to improve their position. Tine Slabe (F2/Naish) for example moved several steps and was stopped by Matteo Guazzoni (RRD/ Simmer Style) Also others pushed themselves a bit forward…

In the end it was exiting as Normen managed to get over Kevin and faced Andre Paskowski in the final. There the F2/Nort Sails rider was hitting big and kept his first place position.
So in the end of the day we finish with the 4th result on the 4th stop and will see how the greek wind gods will behave during the next days. It looks good so far and on the second day of competition the contest continues with another single elimination.

Skippers meeting will be at 12 so don’t expect any news before 1 pm as some riders were hitting town again…

Stay in touch and keep your fingers crossed for us…
