Gran Canaria PWA Grand Slam 2005 - Day 5 Summary.
Ricardo Campello (V-111, JP/Neil Pryde) takes the freestyle double elimination in hurricane winds.
In one of the windiest freestyle contests to date, Ricardo Campello (V-111, JP/Neil Pryde) ripped his way to first place in the double elimination in radical 3.0 winds. In the final of the double elimination Campello beat single elimination winner Kauli Seadi (BRA-253, Quatro/Naish).

The freestyle double elimination was progressing rapidly in Pozo?s nuclear winds. The riders were putting up an impressive show considering the wind speed with big double forwards, aggressive ponchs in and out, shaka?s, T-bones and many more radical moves. In heat # 62 it was decided who would take on the single elimination?s number three and four, Robby Swift (K-89, JP/Neil Pryde) and Ricardo Campello (V-111, JP/Neil Pryde). Leo Ray (F-200, Naish/Naish) took care of Douglas Diaz (V-34, Fanatic/North) and Jose Estredo (V-01, Fanatic/North) knocked out Andre Paskowski (G-2, F2/North).
In the next heat, Swift was all fired up and out sailed Leo Ray and moved on, while Campello finished off Estredo with several double forwards. When Swift and Campello hit the water to battle it out for a spot against single elimination number two Anthony Ruenes (F-85, Tabou/Gaastra), the water started flying as the wind increased even more. Both riders went all out with shaka?s, pushloops, ponchs and shove it into spocks. While Swift went for the one handed ponch right at the horn, Campello went for the double and a funnel and took the heat in the end.
In heat # 65, Ruenes vs Campello, Campello opened fire on Ruenes with a big ponch coming in. Both sailors stuck a shaka and switchstance spock 540?s. Campello nearly got himself killed in a radical air chacho attempt and landed a sick pushloop overpowered on his 3.3. Ruenes put up a formidable fight, but couldn?t prevent Campello from advancing.
Heat # 66 was against single elimination winner Kauli Seadi and Ricardo Campello in 3.0 winds. Campello was in spectacular form, doing big ponchs in and out, all sorts of spock variations and big jumps like a shaka and a high pushloop. Seadi showed no fear by going for a double forward in the howling winds, but didn?t quite stick it. Although both riders were sailing very strong in the exceptionally brutal conditions, it was Campello who was being the most consistent, beating Seadi in his own game. Things were not decided just yet.
In absolutely hammering winds gusting up to 55 knots, Seadi and Campello went at it again to decide once and for all who is the best freestyler in Pozo Izquierdo. Both sailors started out with a ponch on the way in, Seadi sticking it, Campello missing out on the landing. Campello redeemed himself with a backloop followed by a pushloop and a forward, while Seadi made a switch airjibe before launching into a forward of his own. Campello was speeding downwind looking for that double forward, hitting the lip and rotating once, but decided in mid air not to go for another rotation. Seadi got his big jump with an air chacho, but Campello filled up the score sheets with gozadas, switchstance spock 540?s and a shaka attempt on the horn. Seadi went for a full speed flaka, almost ending up on the beach and while he managed to pull off a sick pushloop in the 3.0 winds, Campello came out on top, winning the men?s freestyle double elimination.
Before the freestyle mayhem started off, the men wavesailors completed the first round of the double elimination and progressed well into the second round before the waves dropped and the freestylers took over. Man of the match was definitely Orjan Jensen (E-19, North), launching into an amazing 40 ft backloop and sticking a sky-high double forward without breaking a sweat. There are three more heats to go on the ladder before the second round is completed. Forecasts are still looking good for wind and waves, single wave winners Kauli Seadi (BRA-253, Quatro/Naish) and Daida Moreno (E-64, Mistral/North) cannot lean back and relax just yet.
