Mast kaputt 09.07.08 - 12:04
Hallo Zusammen,

Gruss
Jonas

Jonas,

The fact that your mast is broken right at the boomhead connection with the mast looks pretty weird to me, especially after ± 1 year old of usage. If you didn't tighten the boomhead too much, then something else must have cause the mast to fail at that point obviously. Leaving the sail rigged up overnight will never cause a mast to break at the boomhead in my humble opinion. Famous masts from a well-known brand in 2005-2006 were snapped right after the first or third rigging up of the sail on the beach, not after 1 year of use.

One possible althought very remote explanation is a thermic shock : if you leave your rig in the sun for a while and go out sailing, immediately pumping the sail or loop and land violently, it may cause the mast to break while still hot. A good tip to avoid such a thermic shock is to cool your rig in water before going out sailing.

Good luck in Hinwill...

Cheers !

JM

please specify the damages to the mastJeanMarc

Jonas,

I'm unsure I did understand your problem correctly. There is a big difference between a broken mast and a bent mast.

1) A broken mast usually happens when the boom is attached too tightly to the mast, i.e., by applying too much force at the boomhead-mast junction. Typical symptoms are carbons fibers that looked like being crushed, snapped, fallen apart or broken up in several segments. This has nothing to do with the sail per se. This is not covered by the warranty.

2) A bent mast usually happens when the rig is left under tension in extreme heat, i.e., typically left in the sun for several hours. What happens is that the resin inside the mast starts to melt down at high temperature (it's called resin creeping), producing a deformation of the mast under load (mast becomes permanently bent) and hardens back to its nominal state at lower temperature.
The key point is that carbon fibers don't look crushed, damaged or broken; it's just the resin which has melt down and the carbon fibers are slightly bent over one direction. You cannot unbend this process, unfortunately, to try to get back a straight mast again. The mast will be under perfect condition to function with the sail, except for the slight visually disturbing bent. Mine is S-bent all over and still in perfect function.
This might be covered by the mast warranty as this problem usually occurs on mast older than 5 years. Check it out with your mast manufacturer.

However, if the kink in the mast is severe (section is no more round but gets oval or assymetric), the mast will fail and crack under load for the first time the sail will be rigged up. Crack or fracture lines will appear right at the kink mostly, but rarely at the opposite side of the kink. If in doubt, better dump it to the trashbin than be sorry in the middle of the sea... Or replace only the bottom mast half part if available.

Cheers !

Dear JeanMarc,
thank you for the Infos.
I think the mast is definitly broken and not just bent.
You wrote that this usually happens when the boom ist attached too tightly to the mast
but this is not the case (in my opinion ).
However - I'm going to go to the surfshop in "hinwil" where I bought the rig and ask
if it's covered by the warrenty.
Perhaps I'm lucky

Thanks and have a nice day

Cheers
Jonas

(I hope my english is not to bad and I didn't make to much mistakes )

Hey faZZo,
