Tonel is a sand beach surounded on 3 sides by tall cliffs, with a large rock in the water just upwind of the sailing area. Sounds like a nightmare for windsurfing but it is actually really good fun. It works in the same "Nortada" thermal conditions as Guincho but the wind is supposed to be stronger here then in Guincho, which was certainly the case when we were there.
There are many hazards to be aware of when sailing here.
South of the large rocky island, about 50-100m south of this rock is small group of rocks that are submerged at high tide.
About 200m south of these rocks is another group of submerged rocks.
South of that the current pulls south along the coast and towards the cliffs where there is a ridiculous shorebreak and no wind!!!
The wind is super gusty in the impact zone due to the island just upwind of where you launch.
With all that in mind...
...The launch spot is just downwind of the first group of rocks downwind of the island. You have a 200m wide channel to sail out, Once out work your way upwind towards the island and sail back towards the beach. Depending on tide and swell size the peak shifts a little. It is possible to take off on the wave just downwind of the island outside the first group of rocks, do you first turns infront of the rocks, keep going on the wave down the beach a little and then kick out to sail back out in the channel.
Its probably best to ask some locals to point out these hazards before you launch.
Despite it sounding a bit hardcore, the spot is really good fun to sail with some excellent wave riding to be had on the way in.
Rig a little bigger and if you are unsure take a floatier waveboard then usual.
