Day 2
What do the Caribbean guys have what all the other sailors don´t ? That´s the question of the day, once again. In the end of the first windy day at the 2009 PWA Freestyle Worldcup at the Island of Lanzarote, The Caribbean Freestyle Gurus Estredo, Thode and Offringa prooved again that at the moment they are just unstoppable. The Competition started in the early morning with clowds and still not really much wind, but good enough to star with the first rounds of the first 2009 Single Elimination. The Level has rised once again. All Sailors just made a big show for the crowds, with EFPT Tourleader Steven van Broekhoven showing that he might be able to get involved into the battle for the Top Places. He could only be stopped by Kiri Thode. Thode has been sailing at another Level still and after beating also Marcilio Browne, he went without problems into the Final.
His Opponent in the Final ? No question, seems like Estredo and Thode still got the Abo for the Lanzarote finals. Actual worldchampion Estredo rotated himself straight into the final, with big Airmoves and Freestyle Kiri Style. The Final became a pure demonstration of New School Freestyle, just enjoyable for anybody else. Airflakas into Puneta, Airbobs, Burners, Double moves, Pushloop and Airchachoo and in the end estredo took the win with a very close decision by the Judges.
Also Caribbean girl and Worldchampion Sara Quita, who won her 2008 title without loosing a single Heat, is on the best way to break this record. Only the battle into the final against Quita became exciting, since Treboux, Nagoshi, Moreno and also de Brendt fight for the second place. de Brendt lost vs Treboux and one of the closest Heats and Nagoshi kicked out Moreno.
Quita won also her Final against Treboux with sick Shakas, Esliders, Powerspocks and Grubbies and a whole variety of Switch Moves. Right after the Final the Double elimination was started and especially van Broekhoven and Yoli de Brendt seemed to use their chance on the way up to the podium, winning one Heat after the other, only the night stopped their run, which might be continued the next day
Day 3
First Freestyle Double Elimination finished and the second Single Elimination done as well, it´s been a long Windsurf day at Lanzarote and with really amazing conditions. Windspeeds around 35 knots and Waves up to 5 metres made life hard for some Freestylers and life easier for the rest. In the Double Elimination Antxon Otaegui took advantage of the conditions and jumped himself wit perfect Double Loops and Airchachoos into the final of the Double Elimination, where Gollito Estredo seemed to be too strong and could not be beaten. Japanese Junko Nagoshi also liked the conditions and found her way up into the final against Sara Quita. Also here the actual Worldchamp Quita was a number too big for her opponent. right after the Finals of this Double the second Single Elimination of the Event has been started.
With still increasing winds and waves the action became just unbelievable and a great combintion of Freestyle and Wavejumps. But fast it was clear that those situations really fit some riders best. Again it were Estredo, Thode, Brawzinho going up to the Semifinal, but this time with Niko Akgaczyan instead of Antxon Otaegui. Estredo had to battle it out with Brawzinho while Thode had to deal with the Frenchmam. The Heat Brawzinho - Estredo might have been one of the most powerful Freestyle Heats ever and in the end it was Brawzinho who could manage his way into the final against Thode. The Brasilian somehow manged to even top his previous Heat performance in the final and let Thode not the slightest chance. Estredo could win the small final for the third place.
Yoli de Brendt took revenche in her first Single Elimination Heat against Daida Moreno and advanced into the Semifinal vs Sara Quita, who again was sailing in her own private league and sent de Brendt into the small final, where Laure Treboux was waiting while Junko Nagoshi became the opponent for Quita for first Place. The conditions with huge waves and now pretty shaky winds became very difficult and also Sara Quita could not perform as good as she used to but she could still win against an outstanding sailing Nagoshi. Yoli de Brendt saved her third Place against Treboux.
Day 4
It was a day for the PWA history book. The morning welcomed the Sailors with already more than 35 knots wind and another massive Swell hitting the coastline of Costa Teguise. Perfect setup for a big Freestyle day. Unluckily the Rescueboat broke down and everybody was put on hold for three hours. Only Tonky and Taty Frans, Nikolas Akgaczyan and Andre Paskowski used their time to rip some waves and get some massive Air while the rest was rigging their smallest sails. At around two in the afternoon the Competition could finally start. Taty Frans looked like he got his flow while wavesailing and brought it into his Freestyle Heats, with super nice and smooth Moves he sailed himself up to the Heat for 3rd place, where Gollito Estredo was waiting and able to Stopp Taty´s run. Estredo showed that he was willed to win also this elimination and so the Contest.
In his next Heat he left Kiri Thode no chance to straight move into the Final against Brawzinho. What Estredo performed in this first Final can´t hardly be described with words. A sick firework of the most radical Moves, crowned with a fully planned one hand Airchachoo. The Final had to be repeated, since Brawzinho had lost only once so far and you need to loose twice to be out. Even with a little less performance Estredo won also this final and so this second Double elimination and the Event.
Maybe the only person really waiting for the conditions of today has been Daida Moreno. With her 3,4 fully powered up she jumped herself into huge stalled forwards, backloops, tweaked Pushloops and Double Loops and kicked out her sister Iballa, Nayra Alonso, Laure Treboux, Yoli de Brendt and Junko Nagoshi. Only Sara Quita was able to stop Moreno´s run and also saved herself the win of this Double Elimination and so also the Contest win.
No time has been wasted and the third Single Elimination was started right away, to make another Double Elimination at the third Event day possible.
Final Day
The last day of another great Freestyle Worldcup at Costa Teguise - Lanzarote. It should become a very long day, with a Single and Double Elimination to complete. For Event winner Gollito Estredo the day started a little later, he overslept his first Heat and was kicked out by Yegor Propietinsky and let the way free for Kiri Thode, Tonky Frans, Antxon Otaegui and Andre Paskowski into the semi Final, where Thode and Frans made it into the Final. Thode used his chance to finally win an Elimination. In the women round it was again Sara Quita who made it into the Final against Daida Moreno to save another victory. The last double elimination was started right away and some sailors were hoping Estredo might not even start in this Double. But he did and left some victims, like Marcilio Browne, Antxon Otaegui and Tonky Frans, behind.
By also winning the first final against Kiri Thode, the venezuelan managed to win ten Heats in a row. Would he make it eleven or could Kiri finally manage to get his first Double Elimination win against Estredo ? He fired some Tripple Punetas, Double Flaka, Culo into Puneta and sick Airfunnel to really beat Estredo and take the second Place at the 2009 PWA Lanzarote Event, behind Estredo and in front of Otaegui. In the women Double Elimination Yoli de Brendt started with the high score women heat of the Event, landing all her Moves dry and full planning. Only Junko Nagoshi could stopp de Brendt´s run to than advance also against Treboux and Daida Moreno. Even by losing the final against Sara Quita Offringa, Nagoshi jumped herself onto second place behind Quita and in front of Moreno. The next Freestyle Worldcup will be at Sotavento Beach at Fuerteventura Island end of July.
